Why Are Vegans So Skinny? Because Most People Are Fat Or Obese

I was at a vegan restaurant a few months ago and saw a poster on a wall showing 2 pictures of a man that is lean and fit with the words vegan under it, and another picture of the man looking overweight or obese showing a bunch of animal products like meat and dairy under it. The poster was basically giving off the message that people who don’t eat meat tend to be slimmer and healthier, but is this really true? Are there any fat vegans?

Why Are Vegans So Skinny?

If you take a look at vegans and why they go vegan, it is usually because they like animals and don’t believe in killing them for food. But another very common reason is that the person already looks after their health. They have done the research that shows a vegan diet lowers your risk of getting diet related diseases like diabetes, cancer, and stroke.

Actually skinny is not the right word, many vegans are actually LEAN, meaning low in body fat but they have some muscles. Skinny just means low body fat and no muscles. Many vegans are health conscious and regularly workout.

A lot of famous vegan YouTubers like Rawvana, Potato Strong, Durianrider, Freelee + many others do videos showing what they eat in a day, what healthy foods they eat, how to prepare healthy recipes, etc and a lot of them look lean and low in body fat.

Other people may call this “skinny,” but I personally think that society has gotten so overweight that on average people are just fat, so when you see a person that’s actually lean and healthy they look abnormal.

Does vegan food make you slim?

The fact of the matter is this, vegan or not you canĀ  get fat eating anything. You see some people lose weight or stay skinny eating fattening foods at McDonalds. To gain weight you have to eat more calories than your body needs, the extra calories get stored as fat. To lose weight you burn more calories than your eat. So yea both vegan and animal products can make you slim or fat, depends on the quantity of calories you consume..

But I do think it’s much easier to overeat on animal products than vegan foods. If you look at animal products like meat, dairy and eggs, they have no fiber and are pretty high in fat compared to natural vegan foods.

Natural vegan foods like rice, potatoes, corn, and fruit are high in fiber which help you feel full, and they contain lots of vitamins and minerals which also helps your body feel nourished and full. But if you eat vegan junk food then you’ll get just as fat as you would eating animal products. Oreos is vegan but it doesn’t mean it’s good for you, potato chips are usually vegan but it will certainly make you gain weight if you eat too much of it.


So basically I think the reason why it’s unusual to find a vegan who is fat and unhealthy is because someone who chooses to be a vegan is already prone to healthy eating habits, so therefore they tend to choose the healthier natural vegan foods like fruit, potatoes, rice, and corn. These foods are high in fiber and low in fat, this help keeps you slim.

I’ve been a vegan for about 5 years and for most of these years I ate lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, rice, potatoes, and whole grain bread, for years I was slim and felt pretty healthy. But since late 2016 and most of 2017 I’ve eaten a lot more processed vegan foods that tend to contribute to weight gain such as fake meats, vegan cheeses, potato chips, and other things like that. I have gained about 20lbs in about a year and a half in doing so.

But as a vegan I do feel somewhat responsible to look healthier, I mean, being an overweight vegan doesn’t make the veganism look good. This is why I plan on eating more like I did back when I was a skinny vegan from 2012-2015. Lots of whole unprocessed vegan foods. Smoothies, rice and potatoes, and lose the high fat processed junk!
