In recent years the idea that eating more plant based foods being good for your health has been catching on to more and more people in the mainstream. 4% of the US population don’t eat meat, and about 1/4 of them are vegans.
But a lot of people still don’t know the difference between the different types of meatless diets out there. Either you eat meat, or you don’t. Vegans and vegetarians, they’re the same. But are they? No they’re not.

What is the difference between a vegan and vegetarian?
Vegans eat no animal products, while vegetarians still eat eggs and dairy.
I used to know a guy who would order only vegetarian food whenever we’d hang out at a restaurant, I asked him why he didn’t eat meat and he told me he avoided meat cause he didn’t believe in killing animals. I assumed he also was against any kind of animal cruelty, but I was vegan at the time so I didn’t have any questions for him.
How are Vegetarians Supporting Cruelty?
I have noticed a lot of people who say they’re against animal cruelty go “vegetarian for the animals” and they think eggs and dairy are better because the animals are kept alive their whole lives to do what?
It is standard practice in factory farming to saw off beaks of hens and keep them in tight battery cages, so they have provide you with your eggs until their bodies are so weak they can produce eggs no more, then they are killed.
The Milk, Cream & Cheese
Mother cows are artificially inseminated (raped) and then kept pregnant to give milk their whole lives. After they give birth their babies are snatched away and used to make veal. Then after their bodies have given their last drop of milk, they are sent to the slaughterhouse. Honestly, I think it would be less cruel to just kill them and get it over with.
My Pet Peeve
But after I became a vegan there is this one big pet peeve I had, why do people against animal cruelty think being a vegetarian makes jack shit of a difference? Just because you don’t kill the animals doesn’t mean they don’t suffer for your eggs and dairy. This pet peeve is what drove me to write this post, so if you have any similar thoughts please leave them down below.
