I’ve heard so many people nowadays say they avoid sugary fruits like bananas, because they think it’ll cause diabetes or make them fat. But if you talk to any diabetic or obese person, chances are they didn’t get that way from overeating on bananas or pineapples.
I’ve already talked about the reasons why I don’t think fruit (or any carbs) is the cause behind obesity in another post which you can real more about in detail HERE.
I eat bananas quite frequently, usually 4 or 5 of them at a time in a mono fruit meal during days when I’m on a raw vegan diet. And in my opinion they are one of the best foods for humans. All this “fruit makes you fat and gives you diabetes” is so far from the truth.
So are bananas a healthy food? You damn right they are, and in my opinion they should even be a Super Food, and here are 8 reasons why:
Reason # 1: They’re a Great Source of Fuel
When you’re in desperate need of energy, do you usually go for the coffee? Instead of grabbing another caffeine concoction, how about grabbing 2 bananas for that quick afternoon snack for an energy boost? 2 bananas will give you approximately 200 calories of cleaning fuel for the body.
The body is designed to use carbohydrates as fuel, so the high sugar content in bananas make them a great pre or post workout snack to replenish your energy. Throw a couple of them in a blender with some almond milk for a delicious way to refuel your body.
Reason #2: Potassium Boost
Bananas are famously known for it being high in potassium, and it’s a good thing. Potassium benefits your body’s circulatory system which helps your heart beat normally. It also helps regulate your blood pressure and reduces your risk of stroke. If you’re eating bananas after a workout, the potassium in them can also help prevent muscle cramps.
Reason #3: Helps With Constipation
Experts recommend about 30g of fiber intake per day. Many people, especially people in the western world, don’t even get anywhere near that. Bananas are great because each banana have about 3g of fiber, so if you have a couple of them per day you’re already half way there.
If you’re eating lots of meat and dairy which has no fiber, chances are you have lots of constipation. You may even be taking laxatives to deal with this. Instead I recommend that you eat more high fiber foods like bananas and it will improve your bowel movement.
Reason #4: Sleep Better and Feel Happier
Bananas contain an amino acid called tryptophan, it is responsible for the body’s production of serotonin which is a chemical that helps you sleep well.
Many people with depression have an imbalance of serotonin in their brains, this is where the tryptophan in bananas can help. There are many reports of depressed people feeling a quite a bit more less depressed after eating a banana.
Reason #5: Good Source of Iron
Many people think bananas are just sugars and carbs, but that’s not true. It is a good source of iron. I mean, it’s not the best source at 0.3mg of iron per banana (roughly 2% of your RDI), it can still be incorporated into your diet as a reliable source of iron. Iron is mineral that is responsible for the production of hemoglobin, the thing that helps your blood clot when you’re bleeding.
Reason #6: Low In Calories
I love bananas, it’s because they taste really sweet and creamy. If you’re watching your waist line and counting calories, bananas are great because they’re only about 100 calories per banana. They are high in fiber which will help you feel full, they are also high in sugar so your sweet tooth will be satisfied and you won’t feel inclined to reach for the unhealthy and fattening desserts.
Reason #7: Good Source of Manganese
Manganese is important because your body needs it to absorb calcium, so if you eat enough manganese you’ll help ensure your bones are healthy. Manganese also helps regulate your blood sugar, the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, and the formation of connective tissues. 1 banana supply you with about 0.3mg of manganese, which is about 10% of your RDI.
Reason #8: Virtually Fat Free & Cholesterol Free
Cholesterol increases the blocks of fat in your blood vessels and arteries, this build up blocks the blood from flowing efficiently and thus it increases your chances of a heart attack or stroke. Which is why it’s good to know that all plant-based foods (vegan) are free of cholesterol, only animal products have them, so one more reason to go vegan today!
Bananas are pretty much fat free, I mean, it has 0.3g per banana which is only 2.7% calories from fat. I’d say it’s a great source of calories if you want to drop some pounds. Again, forget about this “carbs make you fat” nonsense.
